Richard Foan to stand down after establishing a solid foundation for JICWEBS Ltd

London – 13th September 2018. Richard Foan, Executive Chairman of the Joint Industry Committee for Web Standards (JICWEBS) has announced his intention to step down at the end of 2018 – exactly 20 years since the foundation of the original committee. Foan will stay involved in the media industry through advisory and non-executive roles.

Foan is one of the pioneers of trusted industry standards for internet advertising. He is regularly seen presenting to the media industry, sharing his exceptional knowledge gained during a tenure spanning 35 years.

Foan has been at the vanguard of accountability, helping media companies find new ways to deliver trust and transparency, paramount in the ever-changing advertising and media environments. He has advocated global standards for local markets, serving for over 18 years as the Chairman of the International IFABC.org Digital Standards Group. Latterly he forged a partnership between JICWEBS and the US-based Trusted Accountability Group (TAG) to bring consistency and transparency to the UK and US markets. Other notable achievements include:
• Foan launched the first digital currency company (ABC Electronic) in 1996 which enabled UK media companies to have their traffic data certified to industry agreed standards.
• His foresight led to the creation of the JICWEBS committee in 1999 to ensure true cross industry debate to progress trusted digital ad trading. This led to the delivery of market-leading standards such as the DTSG Brand Safety Good Practice Principles.
• At the request of the four industry bodies (ISBA, IPA, IAB and AOP) he formed the stand alone ‘not-for-profit’ company, JICWEBS Ltd, two years ago. Over 120 companies now subscribe to the industry agreed Standards for trusted digital ad trading.

Foan leaves JICWEBS with a solid foundation, team, structure and processes to ensure the recent call from the House of Lords select committee for effective industry self-regulation can be delivered by our industry.

Foan said: “As the media industry evolves, it is more important than ever to focus on delivering the transparency that is so essential to creating brand trust. I am immensely proud of what JICWEBS has achieved so far. With our fantastic team, the support of four great trade bodies, and an impressive group of media professionals behind our cause, now feels the right time to hand over the reins.”

John Montgomery, GroupM Global Executive Vice President of Brand Safety said: “Richard deserves recognition for driving JICWEBS since its inception and ensuring the agenda moves forward. While there is more to do, the platform and the team he has built stand as a great model that media industry professionals can all benefit from.”

The JICWEBS Board (with MRA Morgan Rutherford Associates) are now considering internal and external applications for the new role of CEO/MD of JICWEBS Ltd which Foan will be available to support as a consultant. The Board will make a further announcement in due course.
